Which of these would it effectively compile to?

So would it replace (kind of inline), or actually create an anonymous class?

    I'm not sure about the details, but the general idea is that, javac translates a lambda expression into a rather abstract instruction, which doesn't dictate how it is created at runtime. It is the JVM that decides what to do. In the worst case, a lambda expression = new an anonymous class. In the best case, a lambda expression = a globally cached object. In your example, the lambda expression could be equivalent to a static final Runnable object, created once and cached in the class. – ZhongYu May 30 '13 at 3:28

The VM decides how to implement lambda, not a compiler.

Instead of generating bytecode to create the object that implements the lambda expression (such as calling a constructor for an inner class), we describe a recipe for constructing the lambda, and delegate the actual construction to the language runtime. That recipe is encoded in the static and dynamic argument lists of an invokedynamic instruction.

for construction from your example is most effective way in terms of simple compiling or perfomance (but the performance differences are very small, by the tests).

Compiler generated class-file is more complicated and larger (771b vs 1262b) for Lambda example.

    You should use javap -p to show private methods, because this output doesn't show the private static method LambdaCode.lambda$0 that the compiler generated to hold the code of the lambda itself (System.out.println(p);) – Erwin Bolwidt Jan 22 '18 at 6:55

Lambda syntax written by the developer is desugared into JVM level instructions generated during compilation. so the actual responsibility of constructing lambda is deferred to runtime.

To make the Java less compile time strict, and to allow JVM languages to bind code at run-time, Java 7 introduced a new invokedynamic bytecode instruction to the JVM and a new java.lang.invoke API package. invokedynamic facilitates the implementation of dynamic languages (for the JVM) through dynamic method invocation. Lambda engineers chose invokedynamic approach for lambdas. Let's see what the Lambdas are compiled to :

We don't need to understand the whole file, we will just check the piece of code highlighted in yellow color. from line 73 - 80 contains the code written in public static void main() method. on line number 78 JVM is making invokedynamic call to id #2 that is line number 10. So this call will actually insert the run method and execute it without creating an Anonymous class.
