The error said:

at MyServer.main(MyServer.java:41)
java.net.SocketException: Socket is closed

But I really can't find out the bug. Please give me a hint.

In your finally block that is inside the loop, you are closing the server socket :

            e.printStackTrace();

Change your code to :

        socket = sSocket.accept();
        new MyThread(socket).start();
    } catch (IOException e) {
        try {
            if (sSocket != null)
                sSocket.close();
        } catch (IOException e) {
            e.printStackTrace();
        }
    } 
  • Try to run that code and you will see that it leads to the same exception. Also, there is not much sense to close the socket you're just about to process. – linski Jun 11 '13 at 9:21

You shouldn't close your serverSocket inside the loop. Put the while loop inside the try block.

When you start your server program, it blocks on this line:

socket = sSocket.accept();

Then you start your client program, which connects immediatley to the server (new MyClient()) and blocks waiting for the user input from console:

BufferedReader localReader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in));
while((msg = localReader.readLine()) != null) {

When you have connected the client to the server, the server has started a new thread:

new MyThread(socket).start();

which blocked waiting for the client input (the user input on the console from the other side of the socket):

BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(socket.getInputStream()));
while((msg = reader.readLine()) != null) {

But after creating a new thread to process the client request, your server closes the sSocket, and then tries to accept on that same closed socket, hence the exception. If you rewrite your code like this:

                e.printStackTrace();
            }

You will see the following output:

which means that your server is in an infinite loop constantly throwing exception. To solve the infinite loop problem see @gma's answer.

If you run your server in debug mode, and place a breakpoint on this line:

  socket = sSocket.accept();        

and then start the client, type in what you want and press enter, return to the server and step over you will see (only) the first message transmitted - it looks like you didn't want it to behave that way, but that is another problem.

I strongly suggest that you read carefully the offical Java socket tutorial.
