I managed to make the JwtSecurityTokenHandler work with X509Certificate2. I was able to sign the token with a X509Certificate2 object. I was also able to validate the token by using the certificate's raw data through X509Certificate2.RawData property.

Here is the code:

My main question is all about what should I expose to the world from my X509Certificate2. Which part of the X509Certificate2 should I reveal so that the consumer should validate the JWT token but cannot create a new token using the same certificate?


You have to expose the public key which you can get by right clicking on the certificate and do Export (dont include the private key) on the MMC. Then whoever has to validate the token would do

 var x509 = new X509Certificate2(pathToExportedCert);

Or you can also use the byte array ctor and have the public key encoded in base64.

I was thinking to expose the X509Certiicate2.RawData and I assume it doesn't include the private key. am I right? when I construct a new X509Certiicate2 object by passing another certificate's RawDate, I don't see that the new cert has a private key which (I assume) is used to sign the token. – tugberk Aug 3 '13 at 11:19
  • Yes. RawData is the X509 cert data encoded in base64. It is equivalent to export the certificate as shown here ![](puu.sh/3SFr4.png). The difference is that RawData won't include the ---- BEGIN/END CERT... headers and no crlf. What's your use case by the way? If you want something that works cross platform, I would suggest giving the consumers the cert encoded including those headers and crlf. – woloski Aug 3 '13 at 12:08
