I'm using OpenGL ES to render some special effects, I don't want to show this to user, I just want to save the result as an UIImage, can anybody please help me?

this is the code I'm using, I can get an image which contains the red clear color I use, but no geometry drawing shown.

I had a very similar problem - to render some lines and get UIImage. I used OpenGL ES 1.1 and multisampling. I removed some additional code that does not refers to rendering and some OpenGL error checks. You can find the full code here: OSPRendererGL. Also, sorry for my one-for-all method.

I don't see a call to eglSwapBuffers(). That is required to start rendering the frame on PowerVR, even when rendering to a Renderbuffer. See the example code at:

    PowerVR has a deferred rendering design, which basically means it does not begin rendering the frame until eglSwapBuffers() is called. This is done in case there could be additional calls to glDrawArrays() that could be consolidated. The EGL driver understands that the RenderBuffer is not double-buffered, but you still must call it, unless it's done somewhere else already, like the PVRShell, for example. – ClayMontgomery Aug 16 '13 at 22:56

    @ClayMontgomery - The deferred rendering kicks in on any glReadPixels() operation, so this doesn't need to be called manually on iOS. Execution will block at that point until the deferred rendering is completed, then pixels will be read. – Brad Larson Aug 17 '13 at 15:26

  • OK, Thanks. That's good to know. I am a Linux/Android guy, but I think the example code at the link I posted could still be helpful as a working reference on PowerVR. You also have not setup the Viewport for the dimensions of the RenderBuffer. – ClayMontgomery Aug 17 '13 at 17:17
