This is an implementation of the Extended Euclidean Algorithm:

This code "works" per se, but then it throws some weird exceptions (i.e. I put the finally block so that data can be displayed despite of whatever exception or error this program may throw).

Is there any way to get rid of these exceptions? I do not know how.

Note: This is not a homework problem. My school does not use Java for first-year students. This is a tool to solve problems in my algebra course.

Somewhere in your actionPerformed method, you divide a BigInteger by zero, which is mathematically undefined (hence the implementation throws an exception). My guess is here:

quotients.add (remainders.get (i - 2).divide (remainders.get (i - 1)));

So remainders.get (i - 1) is a BigInteger with a value of zero.

While this might represent a deeper problem in your code, here's a quick fix to prevent the exception and help you debug:

BigInteger denominator = remainders.get (i - 1);
if (denominator.equals(BigInteger.ZERO)
{
     //show error message w/ System.out or JOptionPane
}
else
{
     quotients.add (remainders.get (i - 2).divide (denominator));
}

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_Euclidean_algorithm I guess the loop condition should be changed to:

while (remainders.get (i - 1).compareTo (BigInteger.ZERO) == 1)

because at the beginning of the loop, remainders.get(i - 1) refers to the last remainder calculated, not remainders.get(i - 2).
