What I want is:

Is this possible? How should I go around this?

It looks like this could be a useful alternative method for to_json, for the moment, one workaround is to read it back into python and munge :s

In [11]: s = f['Adj Close'].to_json(date_format='iso',orient='split')

In [12]: d = json.loads(s)  # import json

In [13]: [{"index": date, "value": val} for date, val in zip(d['index'], d['data'])]

Obviously this defeats the purpose of an efficient to_json function, but I think it's worth adding this as a feature request - I think this is a fairly standard format, we just overlooked it.

  • Thanks a lot Andy. I encountered this when I was working on D3Js graphs. Currently, I have used "split" orientation and send it to front end, where the zip (underscore.js) is performed. However, it is not elegant in that, the only way I can address the properties is by index. To get the value, I need to say d[1] instead of d.value. This article may help you to sovle this problem. You can write like this:

f['Adj Close'].to_json(orient="records")

In the article above we can see:

records : list like [{column -> value}, ... , {column -> value}]

I solved the problem this way.

It works as it mentioned above, but I found one more interesting way for Pretty output format:

response = make_response(f['Adj Close'].to_json(orient='records'))
response.headers['Content-Type'] = 'application/json'
return response

It this way you get JSON and also use header, so reader will know the right format.
