I'm running daily automated tests that start (with JClouds) many AWS EC2 machines. The problems is that sometimes a machine fails to starts due to a "Request limit exceeded" error.

From the stack trace below I think I have an action that failed 5 times, and 5 is the failures limit. Perhaps this action is jclouds' method describeInstancesInRegion? why did it fail?

I know there is a jclouds bug that sometimes starts a machine with an empty/null name. Could that ruin following describeInstancesInRegion calls?

You need to tell jclouds to not make requests so often when it's polling for instance status updates. You can do that with the following overrides.

computeService = context.getComputeService();

For a full example have a look at CloudServersPublish. Although it's an example for the Rackspace Cloud, the code is pretty much the same.

  • Did you try increasing the poll period? If you're creating a lot of instances that could be the problem. I'd also suggest enabling logging. It will give you a lot of insight into what jclouds is doing over the wire. – Everett Toews Dec 30 '13 at 18:05
