I am writing a listener for handling Paypal IPN messages and responses.

From Paypal IPN requirement, The listener have to post the values received from Paypal back in the same order with a new parameter "cmd=_notify-validate" inserted at the front of the value list.

Your listener HTTP POSTs the complete, unaltered message back to PayPal. Note: This message must contain the same fields, in the same order, as the original IPN from PayPal, all preceded by cmd=_notify-validate. Further, this message must use the same encoding as the original.

However, Go's url.Values variable is implemented in map data structure which order of the value is not guaranteed to be the same when being iterated each time.

And when url.Values encoded method is called, it will be sorted by key

Encode encodes the values into “URL encoded” form ("bar=baz&foo=quux") sorted by key.

The listener is running on GAE thus I use "appengine/urlfetch"'s PostForm function which takes url.Values as the second parameter

As url.Values is a map, the order of values in the map are not guaranteed to be in order. How can I possibly pass the parameter values back in the same order received from Paypal IPN back to Paypal with GAE urlfetch service?


Use Post instead of PostForm. You can probably use the body from the request:

var buf bytes.Buffer
io.Copy(&buf, r.Body)

client.Post("http://localhost", "application/x-www-form-urlencoded", &buf)
  • This works but after the io.Copy(&buf, r.Body) line, I tried to run r.ParseForm(). It had no error since I have the error handler for it. However, I got no value in r.Form. Seems like io.Copy did something to r.Body? And I can't run parseForm() before io.Copy(&buf, r.Body) because it altered the body somehow. Do you have any idea? – Ook Dec 28 '13 at 12:10

    Yeah sorry, consuming the body with io.Copy will make it not available for ParseForm. (and vice-versa) You could replace the Body with a TeeReader: golang.org/pkg/io/#TeeReader. So instead of io.Copy, do r.Body = io.TeeReader(r.Body, &buf) and then call: r.ParseForm(). – Caleb Dec 28 '13 at 15:48
  • Oh my. Now I encounter http: invalid Read on closed Body after calling client.Post(.., .., tt). How can I keep the body open after calling io.TeeReader()? (I used a new variable tt := io.TeeReader(r.Body, &buf) because TeeReader returns Reader that does not implement closer) – Ook Dec 29 '13 at 1:04

    Sorry didn't notice that. You'll have to make your own TeeReader that supports closing. This actually isn't so hard because the code for TeeReader is simple: golang.org/src/pkg/io/io.go?s=15125:15166#L465. Here's an untested example: play.golang.org/p/-0qsJrkw_x. Then you'd use r.Body = TeeReadCloser(r.Body, &buf). – Caleb Dec 29 '13 at 23:57
