Is there any code for a Pos() version that's as fast in 64-bit than the current 32-bit?

To my understanding, the 32-bit version in Delphi (tested up to XE5) adopted the FastCode assembler versions many years ago, but for 64-bit it uses a PurePascal version, which is around 5 to 10 times slower.

Some tests, same procedure in a long loop:

32-bit: 65..90ms

64-bit: 280..300ms

  • I made a QC report about the slow Pos in purepascal. See Inefficient loop in Pos() for purepascal for a faster implementation. Conclusion was to use FastCoders purepascal version, PosSHAor PosSHA2. You can find the code on Fastcoders page, fastcode.sourceforge.net

Conclusion:

PosEx_Sha_Pas_2 is almost as fast in x64 bit mode as Pos in x32 bit mode. Additionally it seems as PosEx_Sha_Pas_2 is faster than Pos in x32 bit mode.

All tests here is with the XE4 version.


Improve purepascal System.Pos() still open in Tokyo 10.2.


Update:

As of Delphi 11.0 Alexandria, the purepascal version of Pos() is using the Fastcoders PosEx_Sha_Pas_2.pas version. Thanks @StefanGlienke for your effort in making this happen!

  • I suspect we need a more comprehensive test before we can say that the SHA version is better than x86 asm Pos. Perhaps substring length is important. Jan 6, 2014 at 23:21

    @DavidHeffernan, I made some more tests for 32 bit mode, and it seems as System.Pos is a bit faster if the substring is found within the first 20-25 characters. After that the SHA version is more effective. The size of the substring does not really have any effect.

  • I just ran an older but similar test. At home, in my Win7 VM, there was no big difference between System.Pos and PosEx_Sha_Pas_2, and my own was somewhere inbetween. In Win64, PosEx_Sha_pas_2 was faster than the rest. Here, in a real Win7, the Fastcode Pzurepascal routine was fastest overall, in Win32 and Win64. Jan 9, 2014 at 16:54

    @hikari, to boost the performance in 64 bit for AnsiStrings, use the function above. Only change the String to AnsiString and Char to AnsiChar and PChar to PAnsiChar. About 50% faster for AnsiStrings compared to the Strings purepascal PosEx_Sha_Pas_2 routine :-)

The C runtime function wcsstr as implemented in the system provided msvcrt.dll is better than Delphi RTL Pos for 64 bit code.

Interestingly, the 32 bit Pos is clearly very well implemented.
