I am using Android Studio to develop my application and making use of gradle by creating a few product flavors. The product flavors are google, beta, and lab.

I only want to integrate Crashlytics with one product flavor (beta) but I am running into an issue which I have not been able to resolve.

With the current build.gradle file, I am able to get the build variant betaDebug and betaRelease to compile, however, I am unable to get the others to compile.

Additionally, I have not been able to get Crashlytics to recognize my application after successfully launching the betaDebug build variant.

The error I get when I switch to a different build variant:

  • Updated my question with the Gradle console. Looks like Crashlytics is looking for the API Key even though I only want it compiled with the beta product flavor which is why I specified an AndroidManifest.xml for it. – michaelcarrano Feb 20 '14 at 0:13

Had a similar problem: I had to turn off crashlytics' reports in debug builds. Michael's answer did not help me: crashlytics destroyed application on start after I added ext.enableCrashlytics = false to gradle configuration. Thanks to Github I found a working solutions:

    So in my case, I did not want Crashlytics to be compiled at all in my google or lab product flavor which is where the ext.enableCrashlytics works. With the product flavor I would have the MainActivity.java declared in all product flavor sources but I would not reference Crashlytics. In your case, since you are just using a buildtype, it would be referencing Crashlytics in the code but Crashlytics won't be compiled so it crashes. The way around this would be to create a source folder for debug but that isn't really the correct way to use buildtypes. – michaelcarrano Feb 24 '14 at 3:30

Many thanks to @bonnell for answering my question via email.

Simply add ext.enableCrashlytics = false to any build/flavor that you do not want Crashlytics to be a part of.

To anyone else having this issue, my problem was that the Crashlytics key wasn't defined in my AndroidManifest.xml file, for example:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<manifest xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
          package="com.example.myapp"
          android:versionCode="1"
          android:versionName="1.0">

    <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET"/>

    <application android:label="@string/app_name">
        <activity android:name="MyActivity" android:label="@string/app_name" />

        <meta-data android:name="com.crashlytics.ApiKey" 
                   android:value="YOUR_API_KEY"/>
    </application>
</manifest>

If I want to share the build via crashlytics.

I need to install Fabric plugin & register After that ..

after building the application, we can easily share via crashlytics

to stop crashlytics for debug builds, I added below code after initialization code in first(starting) activity

CrashlyticsCore core = new CrashlyticsCore.Builder().disabled(BuildConfig.DEBUG).build();
    Fabric.with(this, new Crashlytics.Builder().core(core).build(), new Crashlytics());
