I am wondering how I could write a script that removes all users/data on a machine running OS X 10.9 and restart the setup assistant. Any help would be great, thanks!

Edit: I work in a repair shop and we often set up test users to check a repair is successful. It would be nice if we could just remove this test user rather than having to perform an erase and install each time.

http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20071030151739791 is a good starting point, but it's outdated.

Based on it, I've put together a bash script for OS X 10.9.

Obviously, USE AT YOUR OWN RISK - this is NOT battle-tested.

  • Save it as, for example, resetMac and make it executable with chmod +x.
  • Invoke with -h for command-line help.
  • It is designed to run as root in single-user mode - though it possibly also works remotely via ssh, assuming no user is logged on interactively.
  • To see what it would do (a dry run), invoke it with -t - you can do that even when NOT running as root.
  • There are checks to ensure that the script is run as root and there's a confirmation prompt that requires deliberate input to proceed.
  • The name of the boot drive is reset to 'Macintosh HD', if found to be different.
  • All "real" users and their home folders are deleted - except the Guest user (and any of the behind-the-scenes users such as root and daemon).
  • Optionally, secure erasing of the (resulting) free disk space can be performed.
  • The setup-was-run indicator file is removed so as to ensure that the initial setup procedure is run on next boot.
  • The contents of /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ are removed, as in the original script (not precisely sure what the ramifications are).
  • Not sure if any steps are missing.
  • There are 2 lines toward the end - currently commented OUT - that would self-delete the script on completion - activate as needed.
