Eclipse can't start on Linux: Java Fatal Error

Question

I installed eclipse standard luna on debian 7 by extracting the downloaded .tar.gz to /opt. When I try to run eclipse the splash screen starts up and disappears after 30 to 60 seconds. The terminal prints out the following error message:

I use oracles jdk 7 64 bit but ran into the same issue when I used openjdk 7 64bit.

I would be glad if somebody can help me with this issue.

Try running with -nosplash command line argument. This sometimes helps with gtk-java interaction.

1- Open a terminal and go to your eclipse folder.

2- Run it with: ./eclipse -nosplash

try adding
--launcher.GTK_version 2 to eclipse.ini in the eclipse downloaded file

-nosplash solved on Debian Stable 7.8 64 bit, Gnome 3.4.2 and Eclipse Luna (direct download) SR1a.
