I have an SVG image which I would like to change from a block colour to a gradient. I have got this working, however I would like to have a transition or animation. Is this possible - if so how would it be achieved?

  • You can't (AFAIK). You are tying to animate, in effect, a background image...and those don't have intermediate steps so they can't be animated using CSS. – Paulie_D Oct 31 '14 at 13:01

Put the two fill styles on overlapping <rect> objects, and use the clock icon as a mask object applied to both <rect> objects. You can then animate the apparent fill style by animating the opacity of the uppermost <rect>. Remember to apply a white fill to the mask object (white=opaque, black=transparent).

You can avoid using two rects by transitioning the stop-colors instead:

Here's a demo of the technique using a simplified shape (no mask required).

  • What about the other way around? A transition from a color to a gradient? Doesn't seem to work that way... – Macxim Mar 27 '18 at 21:25
  • @Macxim What do you mean? Both demos linked show a transition from a color to a gradient... If you mean from gradient to color, you just switch the position of the colors like this fork shows – Zach Saucier Mar 28 '18 at 2:25

  • @Macxim That's because you're attempting to transition the circle instead of the stop color like my answer suggests :P If you remove the attempted transition on the circle it will work codepen.io/Zeaklous/pen/xWYeYx?editors=1000 – Zach Saucier Mar 29 '18 at 16:30
