I have made an android Service to play music, when i close my application then it keeps on playing song for few minutes and then automatically stops without even calling destroy method. I am not able to understand why is it happening. Below is the code of my Service class.

I am starting my service with startService() method and i am not calling stopService() or stopSelf() anywhere, but i am not able to figure out why it stops playing after sometime.

  • you need to start a sticky service. Otherwise when no clients are boudn to your service it will stop – Blundell Feb 1 '15 at 8:17
  • yeah i am returning START_STICKY inside start() method of my service, and according to android docs, if any service is started by calling startActivity() then i can be stopped only by explicitly calling stopActivity or stopSelf(). And I am starting my service by calling startActivity() – Sumit Kumar Feb 1 '15 at 8:21
  • There are two things that I wasn't able to understand from your service: 1. Why are you not stopping the service? 2. Why are you resetting media player in your onCreate() of service? Regardless of above questions, I made a music player service following this. If you want I can post a sample code which might help you. – DroidDev Feb 1 '15 at 8:41
  • I have planned to stop service from notification so i didn't write that piece of code yet and regarding the second question i think resetting mediaplayer inside onCreate() doesn't create any problem. I think you should call startForeground() from your service. Here is a sample project of a music player. I might be helpful
