When using binary transfer in postgresql-jdbc, I'm having problems using a prepared statement that returns a text array type: it returns null where it should have value. In fact, in my tests it only occurs only starting from the 6th iteration in the loop.

If I set the binaryTransfer property to false, it works fine.

I've tested it using postgresql-9.3-1102.jdbc4.jar in a PG 9.2 and 9.3 database.

With older jdbc versions (i.e. postgresql-9.0-801.jdbc4.jar), which don't implement the binary transfer, it works fine.

Here is the code I tested:

  • The query is: SELECT proargnames FROM pg_proc where proname ='pg_cursor'. It returns a single row always the same, 5 first times it correctly returns the arguments. And it starts failing on 6th iteration. – alostale Feb 3 '15 at 12:39

  • This seems to be related to the prepareThreshold which starts using server side prepared statements after a PreparedStatement has been executed a certain number of times. When I increase the threshold your example works fine. You should post this as a bug report to the JDBC mailing list: postgresql.org/list – a_horse_with_no_name Feb 3 '15 at 12:51

As replied in jdbc list: the problem was caused because binary type does not implement toString method.

The proper way to retrieve the date would be:

java.sql.Array sqlArray = r.getArray(1);
String[] actualArray = (String[]) sqlArray.getArray();
