I have a sample Spring Boot app with the following

Boot main class

@SpringBootApplication
public class DemoApplication {

    public static void main(String[] args) {

Controller

    @RequestMapping("/")

What's the easiest way to write a unit test for the controller? I tried the following but it complains about failing to autowire WebApplicationContext

    Try annotating DemoApplication with @WebAppConfiguration. If that doesn't work, could you add the code of it too?

Spring MVC offers a standaloneSetup that supports testing relatively simple controllers, without the need of context.

Build a MockMvc by registering one or more @Controller's instances and configuring Spring MVC infrastructure programmatically. This allows full control over the instantiation and initialization of controllers, and their dependencies, similar to plain unit tests while also making it possible to test one controller at a time.

An example test for your controller can be something as simple as

  • the example just discusses basic expectations, but you can drill down further using Hamcrest matchers, and assert anything in the body as well e.g. actual json response by what you expect. Basically, whatever you expect to happen with the Employee instance, you can assert as well, be it transformation to JSON or XML, renaming of properties etc. Aug 19, 2016 at 9:55

    You need some static imports for the example code above. For content() that would be org.springframework.test.web.servlet.result.MockMvcResultMatchers.content. By the way: I'd recommend using MediaType constants like MediaType.APPLICATION_JSON and MediaType.APPLICATION_JSON_UTF8 instead of the String-based values used in the example. May 15, 2017 at 16:13

The new testing improvements that debuted in Spring Boot 1.4.M2 can help reduce the amount of code you need to write situation such as these.

The test would look like so:

    This does not work. You will still get a java.lang.IllegalStateException: Unable to find a @SpringBootConfiguration, you need to use @ContextConfiguration or @SpringBootTest(classes=...) with your test error.

    @Lucas The error you get is due to the algorithm that spring-boot use to search for context initializer, you need an application class in the package of testing class, or its sub package, which is marked by @SpringBootApplication or @SpringBootConfiguration, refer to: github.com/spring-projects/spring-boot/issues/5987

Here is another answer using Spring MVC's standaloneSetup. Using this way you can either autowire the controller class or Mock it.

  • This works for me when I have an autowired service field in the controller, I've tried using geoand's way, but the service field always be null, don't know why?

Adding @WebAppConfiguration (org.springframework.test.context.web.WebAppConfiguration) annotation to your DemoApplicationTests class will work.
