I am trying upload a file to a FTP server and I need to use client certificate to authenticate and not the username and password.

Above is my current code, but I am not sure how to implement the certificate authentication or if it is even possible to do it. Do I have to create the certificate? Or the server will provide me a certificate and I will just set it in my request?

  • Follow up question, the thumbprint string, do I have to generate it? The certificate I am looking for in the store is issued by the server I am trying to connect? and do I need a username even if I use certificate authentication?

  • Generally you generate a certificate and provide the server admin with its public key or if it is a certificate signed by a CA, you may not need to provide it at all. Or you send a certificate-signing request to the server admin. There are lot of options. This is a bit out of scope of your question. You should better ask a new one. Or do some research. Regarding username: I believe that usually you need to use username. I can imagine that the username may not be needed, but I haven't seen such a setup yet. Mar 18, 2015 at 16:08

You can use ComponentPro for this. This code example explains how to authenticate the client using a certificate:
