I have a dataframe and I want to create a dotplot comparing the value for each Cntrl ($Cntrl) type for each variable.

Here is the structure of the dataframe.

Here is my working code to produce the desired dotplots.

This works fine. The problem is that I want to add a horizontal line denoting the median for each plot. I have made a few attempts and they are all failing. Here is the latest.

Error in eval(expr, envir, enclos) : object 'medvL' not found

I think it is related to how I am using d_ply. The following works.

However, this doesn't. It plots the median line at the median value for the first variable for all of the plots for all the variables.

Not having reproducible data, I am not sure this works, but here is code that could help.

First calculate the medians:

f <- as.formula(paste(Cntrl, "~", valueL))
medians <- aggregate(f, data=x, median, na.rm=T)

Then add to your ggplot call in your function, with modifications as to color, label and size to your desires:

+ geom_text(data=medians, color="red", label="|", size=8)
  • thanks, but this make a median for each Cntrl group for each variable, however I only want the meadian for each variable. As I posted above (with recent edits) I am having problems with the use of d_ply – user2814482 Mar 19 '15 at 14:28
