I am experiencing OOME when I save big data to hdfs

I am using this in spark-submit:

--num-executors 2 --driver-memory 1G --executor-memory 1G --executor-cores 2

Serialized task 8:0 was 30617206 bytes, which exceeds max allowed: spark.akka.frameSize (10485760 bytes) --- (1) what is the 30MB serialized task?

Consider using broadcast variables for large values. --- (2) what should be the broadcast variable? rdd2? or the accumulableCollection since that is what I am writing to HDFS?

When I increased the frameSize, the error is now: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space, so I have to increase the driver-memory and executor-memory to 2G for it to work. if accumulableCollection.value.length is 500,000 I need to use 3G. Is this normal?

The file is only 146MB and contains 200,000 rows (for 2G memory). (in HDFS it is split in 2 partitions, containing 73MB each)

  • Sometimes this is caused by configuration problems. How are you initializing your spark context? Have you tried submitting this locally? Have you tried running the same code in the interactive shell connected to your cluster/stand-alone manager? – Myles Baker Apr 9 '15 at 13:48

It means pretty much what it says. You are trying to serialize a single object which is very large. You should probably rewrite your code to not do this.

For example, I am not clear why you are trying to update an accumulable collection, and doing so in a filter, which could even execute many times. You then cache the RDD, but for which you already tried to have a copy on the driver? Then you're adding other values to the local collection then turning that into an RDD again?

Why the accumulableCollection at all? Just operate on RDDs. There is a lot of redundancy here.

  • Hi Sean, accumulableCollection is for invalidrows in RDD. That’s why it’s in the filter. I updated the code to show this. the filtered and valid rows (rdd3) will be saved in parquet. while the extracted rows / invalid will be saved in HDFS. I cached the rdd to prevent duplicates in accumulableCollection since it is executed more than once. – sophie Apr 13 '15 at 2:28
  • also, did you mean accumulableCollection.value is being serialized before being saved to hdfs? i tried using kryo serializer (by adding to spark conf) but the result is the same. – sophie Apr 13 '15 at 9:45
  • That makes more sense and rules a lot out. (BTW you don't need this var valid in your code, just end with false or true...) I think the issue is that you have a huge collection at the end that you're trying to put into memory. Just write it directly to HDFS. There's no need to use Spark. – Sean Owen Apr 13 '15 at 10:04
  • yes, the accumulableCollection that will be written in HDFS has the max size of 840MB or 1.3M rows. in this scenario I am just writing 146MB of data. How do I write it directly to HDFS without using Spark? Isn't there any workarounds here to save a big data to HDFS? – sophie Apr 13 '15 at 11:42
  • Workaround what? using Spark to get to HDFS is kind of redundant. Just use the HDFS APIs directly. I suppose one of your problems here is that you have a large set of errors to deal with, but are treating it like "small data" that can be copied back to driver memory. There's not a great way to split an RDD into two RDDs based on a predicate, but you could cache the parent, and filter in good lines once, then filter in bad lines the next time, and end up with RDDs of both. – Sean Owen Apr 13 '15 at 12:50

The central programming abstraction in Spark is an RDD, and you can create them in two ways:

(1) parallelizing an existing collection in your driver program, or (2) referencing a dataset in an external storage system, such as a shared filesystem, HDFS, HBase, or any data source offering a Hadoop InputFormat.

The parallelize() method (1) requires that you have your entire dataset in memory on one machine (pg. 26 Learning Spark).

Method (2), referred to as External Datasets, should be used for large files.

The following line creates an RDD using the contents of accumulableCollection.value and requires it to fit on a single machine:


You might also exceed memory when you cache the RDD:


This means the entire textfile RDD is stored in memory. You most likely do not want to do this. See the Spark documentation for advice choosing caching levels for your data.

  • Hi Myles, I removed the rdd.cache (although I need it to avoid duplicate values in accumulableCollection ) but I still get the same OOM error. I also updated the error thrown. I've set the spark.storage.memoryFraction to 0.4 btw. – sophie Apr 10 '15 at 17:42
