What is the best way to document, for phpdocumentor2, a method that is a generator.

I don't think @return really works for yield, but I can't seem to find any proper alternative.

Is it just a matter of waiting for phpdoc to catch up?

    As of now there is no spec'd way to do this. You are correct in that @return is certainly incorrect. Most likely the syntax will be either @yield V or @return Generator<V>, maybe with the ability to specify K, S and R as well. I went with @return Generator|SomeObject[], where SomeObject is the thing being yielded.

PhpStorm handles this well too, as it now normally hints Generator methods and when iterated it hints SomeObject methods.

(Still, I would prefer a native @yield.)

    Editor hints: Netbeans just need a SomeObject (or \SomeObject) in @return to prompt SomeObject's methods. PhpStorm needs extra [] at the end of type (SomeObject[]). So I thinkbest option is to write it like @Robbert wrote: @return Generator|\SomeObject[]. – lord_t Jun 2 '16 at 11:04

From the PHP Manual:

When a generator function is called for the first time, an object of the internal Generator class is returned.

So strictly speaking, @return Generator would be correct, although not super descriptive of what you can expect to get back when you iterate over the generator.

For practical purposes yielding a value means returning an array of values. Therefore, most beneficial would be to specify an array of specific types as a return value.

Example with auto-complete

As noted in the comments, there are caveats, but having a working type completion outweighs them in my mind. Therefore, from the standpoint of usability I don't see a better way to do it until this will be resolved in the upstream.

  • Although I agree that in most cases it's probably OK to mark a generator function as returning an array, I think it's important to highlight some cases where a generator and an array will behave differently. For example, calling sizeof on a generator will return 1. Calling array_keys on it, will trigger a warning. Trying to access a specific value ($generator[15]) will throw a Fatal error. – Maxime Rainville Apr 18 '16 at 10:35
  • @MaximeRainville These are easy to catch errors. You would see them on the first run. Not a big price to pay for working type completion. And anyway, no one stops you from writing an explicit comment noting that this array is actually a generator object. – sanmai Apr 19 '16 at 1:24
