In following kernel module, I hooked syscall sys_open, and now trying to send filename to process in userspace using Netlink socket, in response process will return a msg, and then according to msg, the kernel module will proceed further.

The function 'hello_nl_recv_msg' which is a callback function sends and receives msgs to the process but How can I send msg (i.e. filename) from function 'my_sys_open' to process in user space? and how to wait for response?

User-space program should create socket AF_NETLINK, address of this socket will be used to send message to it. For detailed info read man netlink.

You can use any standard mechanism for make my_sys_open waiting responce event in hello_nl_recv_msg, e.g. wait_event. Simplified code:

I got that, to avoid processing of received msg in callback function we may use wake_up_### (in callback) and ###_unicast (in processing) function according to availability in specific kernel version. How to do the same in kernel version 3.2.0-23-generic? How may I know which functions are available to do that in different kernel versions? Jul 31, 2015 at 12:55

    Just check sources for kernel you work with. Both declarations and definitions for functions are rarely moved between different versions, so area for search is not a big. Also, grepping or searching using git sometimes helpful.

    You may initiate communication from the kernel space. Note, that pid here is not a process ID but a port ID. So you need to know port of user-space socket.
