What was Entity Framework (version="6.1.0.133") doing all that time?

Little change to the LINQ query, namely removing ToString() call in the select part, makes it execute for 749 ms:

I can see that cast to string has degraded performance of SQL execution, 1.8 times. But the performance of EF degraded 11.2 times. Why is this the case? And if I really need to have ToString() in my select section of the query, how can I avoid this performance penalty?

  • I would try to load this up in LINQPad with your data contexts set up and look at the generated IL for both results. That should tell you exactly what's going on behind the scenes. So I ran the following two expressions through LINQPad on AdventureWorks to test out a theory:

select new { V = row.ModifiedDate.ToString() }

Both had some reflection involved:

It seems like calling .ToString in the LINQ Query is causing extra (duplicative) reflection overhead for each entry. When you call it afterwards, the compiler knows how to inline the reflection to get to .ToString more efficiently.

It seems like the bottom line is that you should avoid calling methods within LINQ Queries, as additional reflection overhead (GetMethodFromHandle, MethodInfo) gets baked into your query in ways that you wouldn't expect.

It looks like the delay is actually introduced by a double conversion (integer -> string -> integer). The property on your domain object is strongly typed as an integer (I assume). When the Linq query executes with the .ToString the field is converted from an integer to a string on the SQL server, that introduces a slight delay as you note in your question. However the data is actually returned from SQL to EF in that string format. Your domain Object property is an integer though, so EF has to convert that string back in to an integer in order to populate the object. EF must parse that string, most likely using Integer.TryParse, on every row, which will have a very large impact.

I'm confident that if you attached a performance profiler to the application you would see that it spends most of the time of the linq query stuck in integer.TryParse.

  • Sorry, I can't get my head around this. Do you mean EF has to populate row.NumericValue? But why? According to the query, the only thing which is needed, as a result, is an anonymous object with one string property named V. Update

If you want it to be faster just cast it using (you may have to create a view model for that query)

select new { V = row.NumericValue as string})

Instead of

select new { V = row.NumericValue.ToString() })

When you call Int32.ToString() it calls Number.FormatInt32 from mscorlib.

However, FormatInt32 is defined in a system dll and it's source is available here

What it going on is:

 for (int i = 300000; i >= 0; i--)
            {
                ToString() //Calls Number.FormatInt32 from mscorlib which is defined to an external dll
                {
                    FormatInt32() //From mscorlib: Call an external dll from the system
                    {
                        FormatInt32() //From ComNumber: Determine the type of convertion
                        NumberToString() // Execute the convertion
                    }
                }
            }

How many result do you get from that query?

The SQL query get executed and then the result (an Int) is converted to a String using a for loop. See the details here: Fastest Way To Convert An In To String

For each of the fetched Integer, it do this

for (int x = 0; x < NumberOfIterations; x++)
{
    s[x] = i[x].ToString();
}

Other performance issues

Also you may get an overhead at creating anonymous type on runtime instead of declaring model. Anonymous types query or normal query in LINQ
