I have a Rails app using a remote Selenium server to run its Capybara tests.

Both the Rails app and the Selenium server are Dockerized and connected successfully: https://github.com/mottalrd/capybara-on-dockerized-selenium/blob/master/docker-compose.yml

My problem is that executing Javascript on the remote Selenium server on Docker does not work. For example this line works perfectly if I run my browser test locally:

page.execute_script("$('#js-fileupload').fileupload('send', {files: $('#input_file')[0].files});")

But fails on the remote Selenium as follows. What could be the issue?

  • It is worth adding that I am using the jquery file upload library and all the javascript seems to be running fine, apart the pieces that interact with that. Could it be some JS load issue? – mottalrd Jun 1 '16 at 11:08
  • When it comes to file uploads in a remote environment, I think you would need to make use of something like the LocalFileDetector (github.com/SeleniumHQ/selenium/blob/master/java/client/src/org/…) for uploads to work properly in the remote environment. – Krishnan Mahadevan Jun 5 '16 at 3:15

Consider the following code

page.execute_script("$('#js-fileupload').fileupload('send', {files: $('#input_file')[0].files});")

What you are effectively saying is that the path you specified in input_file text box should be uploaded. When you run it locally the path is accessible to the browser and can be uploaded. By in a containerized app/browser the path inside containers have nothing to do with path on the host

So you need to make sure that your browser container has a volume mapped using -v /path/on/host:/path/on/container and then you need to update your scripts to make sure that you use /path/on/container for the upload field
