I have my application up and running with Angular 2.1.0. The routes are protected via router Guards, canActivate.

When pointing the browser to a protected area like "localhost:8080/customers" I get redirected to my login page just like expected.

But after a successful login, I would like to be redirected back to calling URL ("/customers" in this case).

The code for handling the login looks like this

The problem is, I don't know how to get a hold of the calling url from inside the login method.

There's a tutorial in the Angular Docs, Milestone 5: Route guards. One possible way to achieve this is by using your AuthGuard to check for your login status and store the url on your AuthService.

AuthGuard

I think this will give an idea how things work, of course you probably need to adapt to your code

I've read that page on angular.io so many times and having missed such an obvious example... anyway, thanks a lot, this really did the trick :) I did found another solution using storing window.location.pathname in the same mannor but the solution you provided seems more like the angular-way to do it.   • @FabioAntunes i see in the sample above you'e not using any specific storage i.e local storage or whatever(i'm not sure is it really advisable to use it) . when page refreshes isLoggedIn will be false and api/login call will be made again n again on redirects. is there any way you suggest to handle refresh in a secure way.

  • why would the page be refreshed? also the isLogged in is just a boolean value. In a real app you would have to do something more like doing a api call to check when the app starts if the user is logged in and then on every api request if we get a 401, make sure we redirect the user to the login page or something like that.     I would use this.router.navigateByUrl(this.redirectUrl); to support query params otherwise those get trimmed.

This code will handle your request:

but be aware that the URL params will not pass with the URL!!

The answers I saw were correct. But the best way to answer your question is returnUrl. like this:

This navigate create a url with returnUrl like a param, now you can read returnUrl from param.
