We have an Azure Mobile App using social network authentication. Trying to add user roles as claims using a custom token handler.

This all works when running on localhost -- the tokens are added in the token handler and they are available when the AuthorizationAttribute OnAuthorization method is called. The Authorize Attribute with the Roles specified works as expected.

But when running is Azure -- the claims are added but when the OnAuthorization method is called the custom role claims are gone.

Authorize Attribute on Web Api Controller

Every call to an endpoint that has an Authorize attribute with one or more roles specified fails (401)

Not sure what is going on with the claims either getting stripped off or not persisted in the Identity when running in Azure.

Note the bit about custom authentication with additional claims. You need to call a custom API with the original token, check the token for validity, then produce a new token (the zumo token) with the claims you want. You can then use those claims for anything that is required.

  • so I should call a new endpoint after they login and in that endpoint if the token in valid, create a new one that includes the role claims and return that to the client. Then all subsequent calls with that token will include the new role claims that the Authorize filter can examine and determine if they should be granted access to the requested resource – MIantosca Oct 21 '16 at 17:03
  • You could do that, or you could go a full custom auth and do the verification, graph API lookups and claims adjustment all in one. I'd probably do the latter personally because I'm in control of exactly what is in the claims. However, both are possibilities. – Adrian Hall Oct 21 '16 at 19:01

According to this blog post, some of your options may be wrong. The AppSettings are only set for local debugging, and won't work in Azure.

Try this:

  • I referenced that blog post when first working on this solution. I had it set up originally with different code for local vs Azure as it describes. But as I started debugging I realized the code is pretty much the same. The three settings are set up as settings in the Azure portal and authentication is working fine in both environments. It is just the custom claims for authorization that is not working. – MIantosca Oct 21 '16 at 11:53

  • I did - I created a custom AuthorizeAttribute and was able to inspect the claims in the OnAuthorization method and that is how I discovered the claims were not present on Azure but they were present on localhost. Also the out of the box AuthorizeAttribute works fine with the role claims - so it shouldn't be necessary but it did allow me to confirm the claims presence or lack there of. – MIantosca Oct 21 '16 at 15:39
