I have a free monad working that does what I want:

Cool! But here is the problem:

I have a List[Operation] that I would like to translate into this monadic structure... how do I do that?

What is the right way to translate my List of Operations into the free monad that I can pass my interpreter?

  • Would you not map Free.liftF over the collection, to create a list of monads, and then use the monadic sequence function to sequentially compose the monads? – jon-hanson Nov 30 '16 at 22:40
  • @jon-hanson This was failing for me, but I replaced it with sequenceU and it worked! Apparently there is some scala issue for this: github.com/milessabin/si2712fix-plugin – prismofeverything Nov 30 '16 at 23:00
  • Yep, sequenceU is the Unapply variant of sequence, required to work around SI-2712 - more info here. – jon-hanson Nov 30 '16 at 23:13

Map Free.liftF over the collection, to create a list of monads, and then use the monadic sequence function (actually sequenceU as you point out) to sequentially compose the monads.
