I just installed Visual Studio 2017. After starting an ASP.NET MVC application I get the message that chrome debugging in Visual Studio is enabled.

But my breakpoints in Visual Studio won't hit. The breakpoints on Razor code seems to be working but Javascript does not. The breakpoints are not fully red like they should be. A restart, rebuild don't seem to take any effect.

I have the following code example

@Html.Partial("_Test", Model.Test) // debugging works here

    var i = 1;
    console.log(i); // debugging does not work here or above
</script>

@section scripts {
    <script>
        var a = 11;
        console.log(a); // debugging does not work here or above
    </script>
}

I don't have the chrome debugging console open and I checked the option in Visual Studio ('Enable Javascript debugging..') which is enabled.

Am I missing something here? Could it be that this is not working in Visual Studio 2017 somehow?

I only have one extension and that is Resharper, but I guess this is not an issue.

  • You're doing better than I am. The option to use breakpoints in JavaScript isn't even available.

    If you run Visual Studio 15.9.12 as Administrator and you try to put a breakpoint in javascript code, even within a .cshtml file, it will automatically pop up a window asking you to enable JavaScript Debugging. Visual Studio 'JavaScript debugging warning' pop-up window However, at least for me, even though it now hits the breakpoints, I cannot inspect the variables, either by hovering over them (pop up will simply not show) or by adding them to the Watch window (it will error out with `error CS0103: The name of 'variableNameHere' does not exist in the cur Jun 6, 2019 at 16:48

This feature does not work for javascript code inside a *.cshtml file, but only for code in separate *.js (or *.ts) files.

enter image description here Notice how the breakpoint in the JavaScript file is active, while the breakpoint in the Razor view is not.

I have also noticed that breakpoints will not be hit for JavaScript files when JavaScript code is executed during page load when the page is loaded the first time in the current Chrome session. Breakpoints will only work after the document has finished loading once.

Another tip: js debug only can be enabled after setting 'start URL' on run/debug.

Only in this way VS will attach to browser process.

    I've litterally tried everything out without success until I read this answer. Indeed, I had my project set up to "Don't open a page. Wait for a request from an external application." This did the trick for me. This guy deserves a beer. Thanks a lot! +1

I had the same issue. I followed the instructions from the same post: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/webdev/2016/11/21/client-side-debugging-of-asp-net-projects-in-google-chrome/

I did the following in Visual Studio: Go to Tools -> Options -> Debugging -> General and turned off the setting "Enable JavaScript Debugging for ASP.NET (Chrome and IE)". Saved changes, then run the webpage.

After this, I noticed that Chrome was not showing the "Debug webpage" before loading my page. Then i closed my webpage and stopped the debugging session.

I re-enabled the "Enable Javascript Debugging for ASP.NET (Chrome and IE)" option, then run the webpage using IE, and it worked. The page stopped and the breakpoint showed up in my visual studio.

I had the same issue, new to .net core, a solution that worked for me was to add debugger; at the top of the script:

  debugger;

  -- rest of your jscript here
</script>

    I didn't find this helpful, as this seems to just pause execution on the "debugger" line without letting me investigate variables in VS. Is there something implied here that I'm missing? May 30, 2018 at 15:58

It does work in vs 2017 only with enabling option "Enable Javascript Debugging for ASP.NET (Chrome and IE)" and setting debugger; in js code in *.cshtml as well as *.js file

After thinking the only way to get this working was to do a repair on Visual Studio 2017, using the installer, I realized that we had BundleTable.EnableOptimizations = true; in Bundle.config. I removed this line and added it to Web.Debug.config transformation and it started working as expected.

  • The real issue I was having was that my code invoked a new window, using window.open(url,...). For debugging purposes, I changed it to window.location.href = url; and that fixed my issue. From what I saw, the debugger wouldn't attach itself to the new window, causing any code in the new window to not be bound.

Two options you could try:

  1. Turn off the "Enable JavaScript debugging for ASP.NET (Chrome and IE)" in VS options, and then use the debugger (F12) in your browser.
  2. Start debugging in Visual Studio and then add your breakpoint(s) in Solution Explorer -> Internet Explorer -> <your view name>. (Assumes you are using IE)

My best guess here (at least in my case, potentially in your case as well) is that it has to do with bundling. The project I'm working on right now bundles separate scripts into one Big Daddy script (without minifying in debug configuration) so my hunch is that VS won't map my breakpoint to that ultimate script run in the browser.

I know this doesn't answer the question since it's just a hunch, but I'm hoping it points us in the right direction. Maybe if we can validate this against others' experience this could evolve into a real answer.

For those who use Google Chrome Portable (or added chrome to browsers debug list manually) helps this:

You need to attach then to proper chrome instance manually and viola

I had to enable Legacy Chrome JavaScript debugger under:

Options -> Tools -> Debugging -> General -> Enable legacy Chrome JavaScript debugger for ASP.NET

I finally got all my break points to begin hitting after I right clicked on IIS Express and Exit after working for many hours.

I had debugger in my script files and break points and as soon as I did a Clean Solution > Debug my breakpoints started to begin to hit again.

I understand how frustrating this is and I am just letting the stackoverflow community know what worked for me.
