By adding a sequence during the recursive build, you can easily create the proper presentation sequence and nesting

Declare @YourTable table (id int,IdParent  int,Name varchar(50))

  • I'm not sure if this matters... The recursive CTE is a hidden RBAR, the result is created line after line... Ordering by the Level should be enough... Anyway, if there is a special order, this would have to be within the input data already... Funny, our answers are almost exact copies, I think you were some seconds earlier... And you are covering some more goodies... Otherwise this might be some overdose... Should I delete mine?

  • The str() is a good alternative to my 10000+row_number. I may adopt it. Apr 26, 2017 at 16:11
  • Just another thought. Order By ID could create unexpected results. Notice in my example Haiku is before Limerick regardless of ID Apr 26, 2017 at 16:16
