I have the following Avro schema:

I use maven to generate the Java file. Avro config:

The generated class through mvn compile code fails on some basic code:

Which I think is due to the Converters not being generated properly:

Is it me mis-using the code generator or is it a bug?

More of a workaround than a solution - put "null" type first and "default": null

  • Type ordering shouldn't matter, though, right? There is nothing that explicitly says null should be listed first, it is just a stylistic choice. Plus, the question explicitly set a default value to a long number, not null, which may be causing the error, so I'm not sure how this answers the problem? Sep 12, 2018 at 20:16

    The type of the default value must match the first element of the union. From avro specification: Thus, for unions containing "null", the "null" is usually listed first, since the default value of such unions is typically null.

  • "is usually listed first"... Does not imply order is necessary. In fact, I have seen coworkers use Avro schemas where the order within the union is flipped, and it works fine Sep 27, 2018 at 21:29

We ran into a similar issue, with logicalType of date:

We needed to update to the latest version (0.17.0) of the gradle plugin gradle-avro-plugin, and the Apache Avro dependency (1.9.1).

Also in our gradle build file, we needed to add

avro {
  dateTimeLogicalType = "JODA"
}

as well as a dependency on joda-time

dependencies {
    compile "joda-time:joda-time:2.10.3"
}

The default dateTimeLogicalType used by gradle-avro-plugin is JSR310, but that still caused errors (even though we are using Java 8).

Try upgrading the version of avro to 1.9.X in avro dependency and avro-maven-plugin in pom.xml

Also make sure to delete previously generated class from AVRO schema and do mvn compile.
