I'm making a WPF text-editor using TextFormatter. I need to indent the second line in each paragraph.

The indentation width in the second line should be like the width of the first word on the first line, including the white space after the first word. Something like that:

Second thing: The last line in the paragraph should be in the center.

how to make this happen?

  • How is the length of the first line determined? Is this a fixed size or is it based on the first Environment.NewLine ? When does the formatting need to be applied? Is it while writing or on a button click or loss of focus? – Oceans Sep 18 '17 at 13:54
  • Line width is determined by the width of the control that contains the text, the formatting should be applied while the user types the text. – google dev Sep 18 '17 at 16:45
  • Alright just to clear up some last details.. does the control AccepstReturn or AcceptsTab? And if this is allowed, what is the desired behaviour then? What should happen if the text is only 1 line (Does this mean the last rule applies)? This is far from being easy. I suggest you use WPF's Advanced Text Formatting.

There is an offical (relatively poor, but it's the only one) sample: TextFormatting.

So, I have created a small sample app with a textbox and a special custom control that renders the text from the textbox simultaneously, the way you want (well, almost, see remarks at the end).

Things I have not done:

  • This does not support edit, it's not a textbox. This is too much work for such a small bounty :-)
  • Support multiple paragraphs. I've just indented the second line in my sample. You would need to parse the text to extract "paragraphs" whatever you think that is.
  • DPI awareness support should be added (for .NET Framework 4.6.2 or above). This is done in the 'TextFormatting' sample, you basically need to carry the PixelsPerDip value all around.
  • What happens in some edge cases (only two lines, etc.)
  • Expose usual properties (FontFamily, etc...) on the custom control

  • I'm not expecting to find a better answer here. I had a task of creating such a custom TextBox for a messanger and I've dug Internet for some help. All I found was RichTextBox, Avalon project which targets very special needs of code editing, and is very complicated, and TextBox source code, which is also very complicated. We've ended up with a nasty code with workarounds and hacks. – Maciek Świszczowski Sep 22 '17 at 9:11
