In a Delphi 10.1.2 application, Web.HTTPApp.HTMLDecode creates an exception when it finds an "Invalid HTML encoded character":

How can I make it just decode HTML character entities and leave other characters alone?

For fast thinkers, I have already tried this:

Web.HTTPApp.HTMLDecode(Web.HTTPApp.HTMLEncode('bad & good'));

But this doesn't work with this string:

Web.HTTPApp.HTMLDecode(Web.HTTPApp.HTMLEncode('controls & components, bad & good'));

IdStrings.StrHtmlDecode is the solution: It decodes HTML character entities while leaving single ampersand characters which are not part of a HTML character entity alone:

IdStrings.StrHtmlDecode('controls & components, bad & good');

This gives back:

'controls & components, bad & good'

At least it does not throw an exception.

  • Note that IdStrings is a unit in Indy. And StrHtmlDecode() is a very minimalistic HTML decoder, it only recognizes the &quot;, &gt;, &lt;, and &amp; entities, nothing else. HTML has evolved to include dozens/hundreds of named entities, numeric entities, etc. None of which StrHtmlDecode() supports – Remy Lebeau Sep 19 '17 at 15:44

  • You really need a replacement function that handles everything in a single pass. For example, if you decoded only numeric entities first, something like &lt;&#38;&103;&#116;&#59;&gt; would decode to &lt;&gt;&gt;. Then, if you decode only named entities, it would decode to <>> instead of <&gt;>. That would be incorrect behavior, entitites are only to be resolved once, they are not recursive. You should scan the document for the first &[entity]; token and decode it as-is, then move on to the next &[entity]; token and decode it as-is, and so on until you reach the end of the document – Remy Lebeau Sep 21 '17 at 23:57
