I'm trying to run a spark job in yarn-cluster mode on my AWS EMR cluster. In my job, I'm using SparkSQL to access hive. However, when I try to run my job using spark-submit, I get the following error:

I'm having EMR-5.8.0 with Hadoop 2.7.3 and Hive 2.3.0. I've looked at many posts online similar to this, but none of them work for me. I'm submitting my job as below:

spark-submit --class com.mypkg.MyClass --master yarn --deploy-mode cluster --num-executors 6 --executor-cores 3 --executor-memory 10g --conf "spark.driver.extraJavaOptions=-Djavax.net.ssl.sessionCacheSize=1000 -Djavax.net.ssl.sessionCacheTimeout=60 -Dlog4j.configuration=log4j.properties" --conf "spark.executor.extraJavaOptions=-Djavax.net.ssl.sessionCacheSize=1000 -Djavax.net.ssl.sessionCacheTimeout=60 -Dlog4j.configuration=log4j.properties"  --conf "spark.sql.hive.metastore.jars=:/usr/lib/hive/lib/*:/usr/lib/hadoop/lib/*" --files /home/hadoop/log4j.properties,/etc/hive/conf/hive-site.xml,/usr/lib/hive/lib/*,/usr/lib/hadoop/lib/* mytest-1.0-SNAPSHOT.jar

I've also added this to my spark-default.conf:

spark.sql.hive.metastore.version 1.2.1
spark.sql.hive.metastore.jars    :/usr/lib/hive/lib/*:/usr/lib/hadoop/lib/*

What am I doing wrong?

Setting my hive.execution.engine to mr in spark/conf/hive-site.xml seems to fix it. But I don't want to change it. Isn't mr less efficient than tez?
