I have had success before specifying the hosts in my elasticsearch.yaml file by IP (hardcoding address:port) but I was told this is bad practice. I am trying to switch to using just the pod names for my ES cluster and now the pods aren't discovered/used as master. I have a elasticsearch.yml configMap for all 3 pods that I mount which has the following specs:

I am trying to get all 3 pods to act as master (and data/client). When I look at one of pod logs (here es-0) after creating my services/statefulsets I see the following repeating errors:

I am still able to reach elasticsearch through the browser at node-ip:node-port but I get 503 errors once I try and do /_cluster/state

I believe I have an error on the "networking" side with the ports but I'm not sure where exactly. What should I look into? Thanks!

You need to connect with the full dns name:

es-0.elasticsearch-internal:9300

  • I tried that and it also didn't work :(. Would the cluster being a minikube cluster have any impact since this would mean its a master node of a single node cluster? – appdap1 Oct 16 '17 at 19:21

    Did you set the "serviceName" and labels on your statefulset object? – vascop Oct 16 '17 at 20:13
  • Yeah i have serviceName: elasticsearch, and the component/role labels as well. (Added the spec to my post) – appdap1 Oct 16 '17 at 20:29

    serviceName is pointing to the "elasticsearch" service so in this case of statefulsets you should use a single service and merge all the ports in that one. Otherwise the statefulset is only attached to the one mentioned in "servicename". – vascop Oct 16 '17 at 20:33
  • Is it possible to have it point to multiple services? Not sure how to combine both as one is headless/NodePort and another is ClusterIP – appdap1 Oct 16 '17 at 20:35
