I was just working with Asp.Net Core Web API, and implementing Authentication. And I am calling this API from an Angular Application. But I am always getting an error as below.

IDX10603: The algorithm: 'HS256' requires the SecurityKey.KeySize to be greater than '128' bits. KeySize reported: '32'. Parameter name: key.KeySize

Below is my code for ConfigureServices in Startup.cs file.

Ah, it was my mistake, a simple one. I was not providing enough characters for the secret key name.

I changed my signinkey to this one,

var signinKey = new SymmetricSecurityKey(Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes("this is my custom Secret key for authentication"));


var signinKey = new SymmetricSecurityKey(Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes("Secret phase"));

That solved my issue, as the HmacSha256 in the line SigningCredentials(signinKey, SecurityAlgorithms.HmacSha256)should be greater than 128 bits. In short, just use a long string as the key.

    When using ASCII UTF8 will give you 1 byte per char. So you need at least 16 chars (16x8 = 128).

I had to use 40 characters using UTF8 with HmacSha256. Then it worked for me.


Open the appsettings.json and then inside "SiteSettings" Or "AppSettings" find the string that you name as "SecretKey" OR "JwtSecret" or what ever you prefer in model as the images I attached to this comment. String length must longer than the current string you have and about 70 characters.




I am facing the same issue that the secret key is too short. However, the short secret key comes from a third which I cannot modify, and the secret key was working until I updated some packages in my project.

Therefore, I did some research and found the problem is caused by updating Microsoft.IdentityModel.JsonWebTokens to a version >= 6.30.1

According to the changelog of the package, in version 6.30.1, it "Enforce key sizes when creating HMAC". If we go to the original GitHub issue page of this update, which is Issue #2072, we see some people found the same backward incompatible problem as well. Then, VitaliyMF proposed a solution here which append extra 0's to the short secret key to bypass the length check. This works well in my project.

Update: I found another way here, where there is a feature flag that you can set to false to disable the security token length check.
