I'm working with one data frame of 3 variables: Date, Close and Popularity. I want to plot both Date and Popularity in y-axis with Date on x-axis. In ggplot I am using the following code:

However, one tricky thing I want to do, is to change the color of both line after a certain date.

Basically, for the segment from date 2017-10-22 until 2018-01-28 I would like the Popularity line to be a different color (say, yellow) and same thing for the Close line to be a different color (say, pink). The idea is to have a break point on 2017-10-22, after which the lines change color.

You can do this with a couple of steps.

First gather to long form, so each row is an observation:

df2 <- tidyverse::gather(df, color, value, Close:Popularity)

Then make a new column that is the grouping we want to color by, based on the date of interest:

                    ifelse(df$Date > as.Date("2017-10-22"), "new", "old"),
                    sep = "_")

Make a named vector to serve as our custom color palette:

my_pal <- c("red", "pink", "blue", "gold")
names(my_pal) <- unique(df2$new_col)

Now plot it:

There is a little gap in the line where the colors switch and we could eliminate this by adding some data points to fill/smooth the transition.

I second reshaping it the way Nate did because I think long format is far more efficient, but if you find it preferable to keep it in your current format you can simply go from plotting two geom_lines to four by turning your two variable columns into four with NA where you don't want data to be plotted.
