I am researching to do a rootkit.

I'm trying hook the gate interrupt 4 with an LKM, working on VirtualBox.

But when I trigger the gate, the VM freezes. Hooking and unhooking seems to be working, but I don't know why it becomes freezed.

Can it be an issue related to VirtualBox? Or what I am missing/doing wrong? The way of hooking the gate is per-cpu IDT. I create a kernel thread in each CPU, and then I install the new gate. In VirtualBox, the same IDTR is used for each CPU, so I had to add some checking to be compatible.

Any help would be appreciated.

The source code is correct. The problem is with VirtualBox. Modifying the IDT, GDT and MSR is possible a reason for it to become freezed.

I was able to add a new IDT entry, but seems the problem is when changing already written values. For example changing MSR_LSTAR register, adding a call gate into the GDT, or modifying the handler of an interrupt on the IDT.
