Have now spent some time coming to grips with Gnome Builder, Glade, Vala and Genie - and considering the excellent Gnome Human Interface Guidelines (GHIG) - why isn't Glade the starting point for almost all GTK GUI applications?

For example, are there any programs that will take a Glade (template) xml file and auto-generate the corresponding programmatic Vala or Genie source code? If there were standard Gtk.ApplicationWindow Glade xml files, for example, that followed the GHIG that were shipped with Glade/Gnome these could be quickly adapted for a specific project and a Genie class template with signals auto-generated - plus a full gresource/meson/flatpak structure. This would simply be imported directly into Gnome-Builder as a starting point. Has anything like this been done?

The following file application.gs is auto-generated from application.ui using Genie attributes composition. Don't want to reinvent the wheel here - hence the reason for this question. The following has some fields removed but the actual file is fully complete and ready to use. The only information required in addition to the content of 'application.ui' is the resource path and ui file name. Everything is already contained within the Glade file.

  • Anjuta is as close as I know something (to what you describe). I usually can create a new project and get a working example faster than one could create the basic files to get started. This is especially nice for SO. – theGtknerd Mar 5 '18 at 3:53

Forget it. Glade once had an embedded feature of generating the corresponding code that would create the UI. This is has been removed for a good reason: it makes the application code unmaintainable, as you modify generated code by hand, and if you want to change your UI you have to regenerate the source and resolve all the conflicts.

Using a UI file generated by Glade is nowadays a couple of lines of code to use GtkBuilder. I agree though that being able to insert in your code the callback with the right signature would be a plus. Maybe GNOME Builder planned to do it? You may want to check GNOME Builder developper's blog.

  • Thanks for this information - our work is mainly with C++ template (meta)programming background, mainly numerical algorithms/simulations using template policies/traits. Hardly any work with C#/Java but a little Python. We've been looking at GUIs to glue everything together - hence the interest in Gnome/Gtk3/4/5... As a learning exercise, I've already written a program in Genie that generates the full class structure from a Glade file with attributes [GtkTemplate], [GtkChild] and [GtkCallback]. But to test it properly, we will also generate main.gs, meson.build and gresources. – AsymLabs Mar 5 '18 at 11:01
  • I don't want to go to the effort to complete all this if there is already something out there - it doesn't appear that there is anything. What I want to have when it is finished is a set of standard ApplicationWindow/Window templates/data entry forms with Popover menus, HeaderBar etc that can be modified as required in Glade, then the entire project to be auto-generated so that it can be plugged directly into Gnome Builder. – AsymLabs Mar 5 '18 at 11:05
  • Also I don't understand why the Gnome repos don't include (preferably Meson-based) snippets that can be inserted within the Flatpak manifest of Gnome-Builder. It would require very little effort and would make development a lot easier. – AsymLabs Mar 5 '18 at 11:07
  • While it might be useful to have this as a part of Glade - it could be better to just have a separate system that spans the two (Glade/Gnome Builder and Genie) just for project initialization. ElementaryOS with Granite seems to be tacking this issue programmatically, rather than via Glade. – AsymLabs Mar 5 '18 at 11:16
