I am trying to implement creating an image file in C. The format of the image I want to be is RGB565. I have followed these two websites 1 2 to try and get a viewable image but I do not seem to get it working. Is the problem in the "fwrite" function because of the little endian thing?

For testing purposes I want an image that is 16*4 large and all pixels are of the same color. (The code is a mess as it is just for testing purposes before implementing it in a bigger project.

    With MSVC you can enclose a struct with #pragma pack(push, 1) . . . #pragma pack(pop) to make it packed. Apr 30, 2018 at 17:07

  • If I copy-paste this code in a new file, compile it (gcc filename.c) and run it, then view the hex the first bytes are still "42 4D 00 00 C6". (gcc version 6.3.0 (MinGW.org GCC-6.3.0-1)) Apr 30, 2018 at 17:25
  • If you are using MinGw, please build with the flag : -mno-ms-bitfields There is a bug quite old on MinGw with packed structure, see gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=52991

  • Did -mno-ms-bitfields fix the bug ? My code should produce the right output under MinGW with this flag. If not there is another bug inside MinGW... Could you confirm ?

  • Yes, -mno-ms-bitfields also fixed the bug. I am going to port this code over to ARM, maybe it will go over smooth there. Apr 30, 2018 at 17:32

You need to pack the file header struct so that the compiler won't pad the entries. You can use __attribute__((packed)) with gcc when defining the structs to accomplish this.

  • That does make it a bit better but it still looks strange. Especially the 3rd byte which is 61, why is is there, there should be only C6. Apr 30, 2018 at 17:11

    Looks like you are still missing the packed attribute on at least one struct then. Because that looks like uninitialized memory in a non packed struct.

With MSVC you can enclose a struct with

#pragma pack(push, 1)
// struct
#pragma pack(pop)

to make it packed. I have found it is only needed for BITMAPFILEHEADER on a 32-bit compilation.
