Let's suppose I have two tables: sales and page_views. I want to see what were the last n-pages that the user viewed before buying the product. What would be the query to do this in Vertica?

in this case, if there were less than n interactions, replace the id by a dummy value (can be 0 or -1)

You can combine the two tables using union all. Then assign a group, based on the sales id after each row. Then enumerate the values in each group and pivot:

Your query refers to a pattern consisting of a series of events: a sales event preceded by one or more page view events.

So I :

a) create a UNION SELECT of the relevant columns from sales and page_views

b) apply Vertica's MATCH() clause to that UNION SELECT - getting match_id and pattern_id - to find the pattern I'm after ...

c) finally pivot, as Gordon Linoff did above, GROUP-ing BY user_id.
