I'm using spring-boot-test to run some integration tests. For some tests I want to disable any database-related stuff (eg mock everything). Spring should even not try to connect to the database.

Question: how can I achieve this?

I tried mocking DataSource, but that does not seem to be sufficient.

I also tried adding the following property: spring.jpa.properties.hibernate.dialect=org.hibernate.dialect.MySQL5Dialect

  • I noticed that the last "Caused by:" at the end of your stack trace says, "Caused by: org.hibernate.HibernateException: Access to DialectResolutionInfo cannot be null when 'hibernate.dialect' not set". Have you tried providing a value for "hibernate.dialect"? – Eric Green Jul 12 at 7:59

  • It would maybe, but I'm using some database mappings and constraints that cannot be modeled in H2, thus the startup fails when providing a h2 db. Therefore I'm just trying to tell spring "ignore any database layer please". I wonder why there is no simple switch to just ignore any db autoconfiguration... – membersound Jul 12 at 8:06
  • What I understood is, you don't want make any DB call while running integration test. If that is a case then, you can mock DAO class method instead of mocking Datasource. – Shaunak Patel Jul 12 at 8:20
  • Yes, but starting up the application will then still require a valid database connection is made (even though it is not used). I want to make the tests independent of a local database. Eg if the db does not exist anymore on the machine where the test runs, it should still succeed. To simulate this, one could even just set an invalid db password during test like spring.datasource.password=, then the test should still run. But that's not the case if just mocking the DAOs. – membersound Jul 12 at 8:24

For the moment I followed the advice to use an inmemory h2 dropin, as follows:

It's not directly what I wanted (mocking/neglecting any db related stuff - as db initialization also takes much time during junit tests), but it works for now.

If anybody knows how to entirely skip db initialization (and thus speed up the tests) feel free to comment.

  • Could you provide an example of this? Eg there is the @TestConfiguration annotation, but how can I mock out the complete persistence tier? – membersound Jul 12 at 8:53
