I am trying to make an NPM package where someone could use my class my intantiating it after they run npm install <package>. As of right now, it works fine in development but after bundling it up through webpack, I install the package using npm, but immediately it bombs out with TypeError: index_1.MyClass is not a constructor

I have tried multiple different flavors of exporting the class but I run into the same exception each time. I tried following lots of other SOF questions similar to this one, but no luck. Where am I off?

NOTE The above is example code in an attempt to simplify the problem but will happily provide the github repo of the actual setup.

  • No, not an angular application. This is straight TypeScript/Node. Angular would have made it a little bit more obvious that I needed to add it to my app.module.ts during compile time. This compiles all the way without any error. Just a runtime error. – mwilson Jul 25 '18 at 3:58

Assuming this is for a typescript project (by the tags of this question), this seems like configuration issue that needs to be addressed by having correct setup on your package.json and webpack config file.

It would be helpful if you can share what's in your package.json, but I think looking at the npm script hooks and trying to properly linking the hooks with the webpack build cli script would be a good starting point for solving your problem.

I suggest you to make sure:

  1. Webpack build process(or whatever method you use for typescript compilation) is linked with the hook(s) that are triggered after npm install on your local, which is automatically ran when someone installs your package through npm install
  2. The compiled javascript bundle is exposed correctly through your package.json

as minimum, you may need to check if you need to actually compile your typescript sources, depending on if you are only supporting typescript or not.

This is off topic, but do not use webpack unless you really do need to use webpack. Oftentimes it is just enough to use typescript compiler itself if you are writing a npm module.

  • I think you may be right on the usage of webpack here. Since this is a node module, webpack may be a little overkill. It seems like webpack is the problem and I just need a different build process. I am just really digging the awesomeness of webpack and want to play with it. – mwilson Jul 25 '18 at 4:30

    Hi @mwilson, Hmm, I think add post install hook of webpack compile cli command on your package.json, and move webpack compile dependencies towards dependency (non dev) will fix your issue. (This may include typings modules as well) – kairun Jul 25 '18 at 4:57

    But now this will introduce (if you care enough) the issue of your module users needing to install webpack as dependency just to compile your npm module. If you just need to compile typescript just running tsc should be enough (but then now you need to properly setup tsconfig.json) – kairun Jul 25 '18 at 4:59
