I have a pretty simple query here:

public async Task<IActionResult> Index(string sortOrder)
        ApplicationUser user = await _userManager.GetUserAsync(User);
        var context = _context.Engine
            .Include(e => e.EngineType)
            .Where(e => e.Company == user.Company);

        return View(await context.ToListAsync());

The problem is it gives me a NullReferenceException when it tries to return. I know the problem is the Where statement because if I use the below it works fine.

public async Task<IActionResult> Index(string sortOrder)
        ApplicationUser user = await _userManager.GetUserAsync(User);
        var context = _context.Engine
            .Include(e => e.EngineType);

        return View(await context.ToListAsync());

I've shifted things around to no avail. I found this similiar issue on StackOverflow: EF Core 2.1 Props inside where cause null reference but ToList() doesn't work for me either.

Anyone know what's going on?

  • Are you sure user is not null?, also, check that the engine type field is not null or is marked as nullable if applies – rekiem87 Aug 28 '18 at 14:29
  • @rekiem87 User is definitely not null. It's used to login and I can pull properties from it in that block of code. EngineType is also not nullable. I'll post the class and error – Ian Gleeson Aug 28 '18 at 14:39

Turns out my Engine table had CompanyId instead of Company. All I had to do was change it to:

var context = _context.Engine
            .Include(e => e.EngineType)
            .Where(e => e.CompanyId == user.CompanyId);

  • It is really weird, @rekiem87, but I can confirm currently it still works in this way. I have not been able to use the full objects directly to make the query. In my case using EF Core v2.2. – joanlofe Jan 15 at 15:35
