How to get sub-categories of a specific parent category?

Question

I had a main category (parent category) whose id = 10. I want to echo just its sub-categories. How can I do that?

@shnozolla simply use getUrl() instead of getName().

In this array of object, you need to use getRequestPath() to get the urls

@CodeCodeO-1-O-log-n getRequestPath() only gets the path part of an URL, not the whole URL. It will lack the domain, index.php (if rewrites are not working), and SID (if domain-hopping is necessary) parts.

In my case I always get root categories even if I provide correct parent category ID.

This code may help if you want to get child category of every current category

    <?php 
    $layer = Mage::getSingleton('catalog/layer');
    $_category = $layer->getCurrentCategory();
    $currentCategoryId= $_category->getId();
    $children = Mage::getModel('catalog/category')->getCategories($currentCategoryId);
    foreach ($children as $category)
    {
          echo $category->getName(); // will return category name 
          echo $category->getRequestPath(); // will return category URL

$children = Mage::getModel('catalog/category')->load(10)->getChildrenCategories();
foreach ($children as $category):
    $category = Mage::getModel('catalog/category')->load($category->getId());
    echo '<li><a href="' . $category->getUrl() . '">' . $category->getName() . '</a></li>';
endforeach;

To get all the active as well as inactive sub categories

$parent_category_id = 10;

$child_categories = Mage::getResourceModel('catalog/category_collection')
                ->addAttributeToSelect('*')
               ->addAttributeToFilter('is_active', array('in' => array(0,1)))
              ->addAttributeToFilter('parent_id', $parent_category_id);

foreach ($child_categories as $cat)
{
    $sub_category_id = $cat->getId();
    $sub_category_name = $cat->getName();
}
