Being new to writing any code at all, I've successfully learned enough c# to make an executible that collects data I need. Now I need to get that data into a spreadsheet for trend analysis of item's killing disc space.

My goal is to import the drive folder size data generated by each server every month (From the C# program I wrote that runs on a schedule. What is created is a report file containing the folder data. the file itself is named as the server name and yy-MM date tag. This part works fine, I have the files being generated)

I'm pretty sure I can write vba code into excel that will import the data from the various flat files by the file name, as my raw data worksheet has a column for each files data to fit into.

So here I am, teaching myself VBA in order to learn how to write code that will find the files with names matching the worksheet column data and then import the file's contents into the rows below each column, as well as skipping imports for when the file name matching the column data is not found.

For example, the flat file for September is named "server 18-09". It contains 10 rows of numbers as below (each row is data of the defined folder/path information): File name: "server1 18-09"

  • There's a good chance that this could be done without VBA as well, but I'm better with VBA than plain Excel. You might be able to import the contents of a folder if you store all your files in the same place. Like Data>Get Data>From File>From Folder but I can't try it right now – seadoggie01 Sep 27 '18 at 15:10

I would start by looking into the FileSystemObject. It's quite helpful when looking through folders/files on your computer and has the ability to read files. Start with something like this:

(Code is untested and is given as is, just an example. It will not work with copy/paste!)

  • Thanks a lot seadoggie01 I am trying your method now and making some progress, just having to figure out how to do the reading each line of the text file(s) and storing the string values in my cell ranges. The ts variable defined as TextStream, didn't work, I ended up defining it as TextRange2 (I'm blindly 'trial and error'ing it due to my lack of knowledge). So far it gets to a compile error for 'Method or data member not found" at loop, where the ts.AtEndOfStream is, have a hunch I need to tell it where to put each line (I'm still confused on it right now) – BBA Hunter Sep 27 '18 at 18:11

  • The only problem I have is error 62 when a blank file exists. Trying to figure out how to add a Do WHILE NOT ts.AtEndOfStream and keep the looping working. – BBA Hunter Oct 11 '18 at 18:36
  • I fixed the issue with the input past end of file if a flat file was blank by putting a line of code in to bypass my write loop if a file had no content this way: If ts.AtEndOfStream = False Then – BBA Hunter Oct 12 '18 at 18:47
