You can use the egen command with its associated function concat() to put together all the letters in one variable:

Then you need to use a combination of the length() and subinstr() functions to count then number of times the sequence of letters appears:

In order to do the same vertically, you first need to transpose the variables.

A bit of mata magic easily achieves that:

putmata X = (hvar*), replace
mata: X = X'
getmata (vvar*) = X, force
