I have a json unmarshal requirement to a struct containing an interface{}. The inner type is known only at runtime, hence the struct is defined with interface{}. However, the type is populated correctly before passing to json.Unmarshal. But the json.Unmarshal always populates the resulting struct with map[] instead of given type. How do I resolve this to get the correct unmarshal behavior here.

  • @Himanshu That's test code. If I marshal an object struct and Unmarshal back to the same one, expectation is that you should get the original struct back. Which is not happening here. – joe Oct 8 '18 at 20:44

You could create an ancillary one type that holds the expected type. The convert from that ancillary type back to the regular one type.

  • Thanks! Isn't it too cumbersome for a simple logic above? but why can't go use the given strcut and unpack using that? In my example code, if I do reflect.TypeOf(o.Res) it gives me the right type already. Why can't the API do this? – joe Oct 7 '18 at 1:46
  • I think the reason may be that function fmt.Printf() don't know the exact user defined type. It can only reflect to get the basic types, like map, struct, int, string etc. – SenZhang Oct 7 '18 at 15:17
