I am using GKE with istio add-on enabled. Myapp somehow gives 503 errors using when using websocket. I am starting to think that maybe the websocket is working but the database connection is not and that causes 503's, as the cloudsql-proxy logs give errors:

Looks like the required authentication details should be in the credentials of the proxy service account I created and thus is provided for:

My question: How do I get rid of the errors/ get a proper google sql config from GKE?

At cluster creation I selected the mTLS 'permissive' option.

EDIT 1: I had not enabled permissions (scopes) for the various google services when creating the cluster, see here. After creating a new cluster with the permissions I now get a new errormessage:

EDIT 2: Looks like new error was caused by the Service Accounts keys no longer being valid. After making new ones I can connect to the database!

  • After using a local proxy I found one of the problems. The name of the Cloud SQL database is NOT 'mydatabase'. The actual name it gets by default is 'postgres'! Still problem connecting though. – musicformellons Jan 9 at 22:10

I saw similar errors but was able to get cloudsql-proxy working in my istio cluster on GKE by creating the following service entries (with some help from https://github.com/istio/istio/issues/6593#issuecomment-420591213):

Also, I still saw those connection errors during initialization until I added a delay in my app startup (sleep 10 before running server) to give the istio-proxy and cloudsql-proxy containers time to get set up first.

EDIT 2: Ensure that Cloud SQL api is within scope of your cluster.

  • Doesn't this assume SSL and also that the call is coming from outside google cloud!? Is that indeed your case? I am not using SSL so far and am entirely in google cloud (database and server). In docs it looks like the proxy-service should provide the credentials: "The proxy checks for each of the following items, in this order, using the first one it finds to attempt to authenticate." The first one being: "Credentials supplied in the proxy invocation command", which I provide via a secret. So what are the above Service Entries doing and should they be added on top of my config? – musicformellons Jan 10 at 11:37
  • BTW I tried adding the two ServiceEntries (in various ways, also trying to 'adapt' for postgres instead of mysql), but keep getting same error message... – musicformellons Jan 10 at 21:34
  • These service entries are for postgres. I believe cloudsql-proxy communicates over port 3307 regardless of the db type. – gsf Jan 11 at 14:44
  • These service entries represent services outside the cluster, but still in google cloud, and it doesn't matter if your app is serving over HTTPS. The "google-apis" entry is HTTPS because the connection error you're seeing is an attempt by cloudsql-proxy to speak with https://www.googleapis.com/... for authentication. – gsf Jan 11 at 14:45
  • Note that in the cloudsql-instances entry you need to switch out 35.226.125.82 with the IP address of your db instance. Did you do that? – gsf Jan 11 at 14:48

Since MySQL and PostgreSQL are based on the TCP/IP protocol(or unix socket on a specific situation) and Postgres isn't using HTTP, the problem comes from the Service's port name,.

First, try to change the port name, you can change it to "db" as example. Another workaround is to use jdbc Socket Factory connecting to CloudSQL Mysql with slight difference :

  • No "Adresses field" /CIDR block in cloud-sql-instance service entry
  • Resolution: DNS for the service entry that allows the connection to the CloudSQL Instance
  • You mean alter the name both in the Service and in the Gateway I suppose? I implemented this and edited the question accordingly. It does not work/ give other error-messages I'm afraid... – musicformellons Jan 11 at 8:50
