Making a dictionary using a trie in C++. Gives segmentation fault on some inputs.

Debugging helped me find that the problem was in the check function. Specifically after it exits the loop, at the check isword condition.

error when input some words

I expect the output to be FOUND or NOT FOUND, but actual output is a segmentation fault error.

    node *ptr how is node defined? Probably one of ptr->children[key]; is uninitialized. – Kamil Cuk Feb 11 at 12:25

  • Please edit your question to show us what kind of debugging you've done. I expect you to have run your Minimal, Complete, and Verifiable example within Valgrind or a similar checker, and to have investigated with a debugger such as GDB, for example. Ensure you've enabled a full set of compiler warnings, too. What did the tools tell you, and what information are they missing? You need to check that ptr is not null, since it will be if you reach the end of the string and it's not a word in your trie.
You can also condense the code a bit.

    const node * ptr = root;
    for (int i = 0; ptr != nullptr && word[i] != '\0'; i++)
    {
        ptr = ptr->children[hash(tolower(word[i]))];
    }
    return ptr != nullptr && ptr->is_word;
}

It's possible that ptr is returning null.

if ((ptr) && (ptr->is_word))

    return true;

{
    return false;
}
