I have been driving myself trying to do something that to me seems like it should be relatively straight forward, I am trying to take a screenshot of specific window (With PrintWindow) And Display the screenshot over new window (using CreateWindowEx and UpdateLayeredWindow)

The Logic :

TakeNotepadScreenShot->DrawOverWindow->DisplayWindow

something like :

1. Take Notepad Screenshot: 
HBITMAP hBmp = PrintWindow(FindWindow("notepad")); //Not Entire Screen, Only notepad

2. Create Window (As Canvas):
HWND hWnd = CreateWindowEx(WS_EX_LAYERED, "WindowClassName", 0, WS_OVERLAPPEDWINDOW, CW_USEDEFAULT, 0, CW_USEDEFAULT, 0, NULL, NULL, hInstance, NULL);

3. Draw Notepad Image:
Draw_HBitmap_OverWindow(hBmp,hWnd);
//Using UpdateLayeredWindow

4. Show Window / Display Notepad Screenshot
ShowWindow(hWnd, SW_SHOW);

But how to display the image? (C++/Console Application/Empty Project)

  • You can use UpdateLayeredWindow() to assign the HBITMAP image to the window. The window will maintain the image and paint it onscreen for you when needed. – Remy Lebeau Mar 7 '19 at 1:36
  • Otherwise, you can subclass the window and manually handle the WM_PAINT message, by drawing the HBITMAP, via BitBlt() or StretchBlt(), onto the HDC returned by BeginPaint(). – Remy Lebeau Mar 7 '19 at 1:37

You'd better create a Windows Desktop Application. I have add a "Print" Menu, Then Add PrintWindow(FindWindow(L"Notepad", L"xxx.txt - Notepad"), GetDC(hWnd), 0);

  • it works, thanks !, There is something else I want to ask: i want to set grayscale effect to the HBITMAP, how can i do this? How can i SetPixel? PrintWindow(hWnd,GetDC(hWnd),0); works great , but i want to change the bitmap data LockBitmap LockBits, thanks =]. – john l Mar 8 '19 at 7:05
