I'm using nested django serializers:

Models:

class Project(models.Model):

    name = models.CharField(max_length=140)

class Feature(models.Model):
    phase = models.ForeignKey(Phase, on_delete=models.CASCADE, related_name="features")

    description = models.CharField(max_length=500)
    hours = models.IntegerField()

Serializers:

class FeatureSerializer(serializers.ModelSerializer):
    class Meta:
        model = Feature
        exclude = ["phase"]

class PhaseSerializer(serializers.ModelSerializer):

For some reason calling the PhaseSerializer.create method complains that create() missing 1 required positional argument: 'validated_data'. I don't see how this can be the case, as it is called with one argument (definitely not null...)

        project = Project.objects.create(**validated_data)

            PhaseSerializer.create(phase_data) # remove this

        return project

  • just pop it out as phase_data.pop("features",None) . See my updated answer – JPG Mar 15 at 3:05
  • Oh, sorry, no, I can't just call Phase.objects.create. The create function needs to do some other stuff. I removed it to create a MVE, but I'll add it back. Edited PhaseSerializer to show that its create function must be used – Alex Mar 15 at 3:07

  • Lol, it's only two levels. Projects contain phases, phases contain features :) – Alex Mar 15 at 3:15
